Regola Encouraged by Federal Action on Caller ID Fraud State Senator Bob Regola (R-39) said he is encouraged by Congressional action on legislation similar to the measure he introduced as Senate Bill 460, which would prohibit the use of false Caller ID information, a practice known as “spoofing,” by identity thieves and scam artists as a way to trick individuals into taking their calls. “Phone companies offer Caller ID services to customers as a way to identify who is calling,” said Sen. Regola. “Unfortunately, the technology also exists for individuals to change the name and number that is displayed on the Caller ID device. Identity thieves will use false phone numbers and identification to make it appear that they are calling from a legitimate location, such as a courthouse. They know that people with Caller ID will ignore their calls if they allow their correct information to be displayed.” The U.S. House passed HR 251, the “Truth in Caller ID Act,” on June 12, 2007. Meanwhile, a U.S. Senate Committee reported similar legislation (S 704) on June 26, 2007. “I am very pleased that Congress is taking steps to protect consumers across the nation and I hope this legislation will be enacted as the law of the land. In the meantime, I will continue to push my legislation in the Pennsylvania General Assembly,” said Sen. Regola. SB 460 is currently before the Senate Consume Protection and Professional Licensure Committee for consideration. ###
