Senator Regola cosponsoring sanctity of marriage bill
Constitutional amendment would define State Senator Bob Regola (R-39) is again backing a constitutional amendment defining marriage as a covenant between one man and one woman. Senator Regola has signed on as a cosponsor of Senate Bill 1250, the Marriage Protection Amendment, being introduced by Senator Mike Brubaker (R-36). Senator Regola served as the prime sponsor of the measure (Senate Bill 1084) during the 2005-06 Legislative Session. “When I ran for the Senate, I made a commitment to the people of the 39th Senatorial District to uphold the sanctity of marriage in Pennsylvania,” said Sen. Regola. “The overwhelming majority of the people I talked to agreed that marriage is the union of a man and a woman and that it holds a sacred place in our society.” While Pennsylvania has a law defining marriage, it could be eroded or eliminated by the courts or the actions of other political jurisdictions, said Sen. Regola. “Any law can be overturned at any time by the courts,” said Sen. Regola. “Because these laws are so tenuous, a number of states have already ratified constitutional amendments. We should give Pennsylvanians the same opportunity to decide whether the traditional definition of marriage deserves constitutional protection.” SB 1250 will be referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee for consideration. To amend the Pennsylvania Constitution, a measure has to be passed by the General Assembly in two consecutive legislative sessions and then be approved by the voters. ### Contact: Tom Hower (717) 787-6063
