Senate adopts Regola’s Local Government Resolution

Dedicates April 14th to 18th  to commemorate municipalities

The State Senate today adopted Senate Resolution 253, a resolution introduced by Senator Bob Regola (R-39), designating the week of April 14th through 18th, 2007 as “Local Government Week” and April 15th as “Local Government Day” in Pennsylvania

“Each year, the Governor’s Center for Local Government Services hosts Local Government Week recognizing the accomplishments of local officials,” said Senator Regola, Chairman of the Senate Local Government Committee.  “The truth is government begins at the local level.  Municipal governments are there to address neighborhood concerns and provide for the well being of the people of the community.”

As part of the week’s activities, the Center recognizes communities for taking action to improve their municipalities.

Hempfield Township along with the City of Greensburg, South Greensburg Borough and Southwest Greensburg Borough shared the 2006 Governor’s Award for Local Government Excellence for Innovative Planning and Sound Land Use Planning.  The four municipalities worked together to create a multi-municipal comprehensive plan to guide growth with coordinated land use and transportation planning.  The plan addressed key regional issues, including core community redevelopment, enhancing transportation corridors, preserving open space and economic development.

Senator Regola, as the former Chairman of the Hempfield Board of Supervisors, was involved in the initial steps of this multi-municipal planning -- and continues to make this a priority in his position as Chairman of the Senate Local Government Committee.

The Senate Local Government Committee, in conjunction with the Senate Urban Affairs and Housing Committee, will be holding a joint public hearing on “Multi-Municipal Planning and Shared Services” on Thursday, April 10th, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Greensburg Garden and Civic Center (Greensburg, Westmoreland County).
